Get a Library Card

Library cards are issued free to residents of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The Des Moines
Public Library also participates in the State of Iowa Open Access Program, which allows non-metro residents the possibility of a Des Moines library card. Ask at one of our service desks about your community's participation.

To get a card, you must provide proof of current name and address and a photo ID. Use our handy online form to print out and bring with you to the library. Your DMPL card is good at all six of our locations. Apply in person during business hours. Children must be present when parents or guardians apply for cards for them.

Promptly report a lost or stolen card by calling the library at (515) 283.4152, extension 2. There is a $1.00 fee to replace a lost or stolen card. If a borrower has overdue items or late charges, borrowing privileges may be restricted.
